How do the Alexa Top 100 fare in terms of page load times?

Page load time is one of the key elements of web usability, and having a lagging response to your website can really dent your popularity. It’s easy enough, for most sites, to handle 1,000 visitors a day – but the top sites out there have to handle thousands of requests per minute, so efficiency and capacity are key concerns. Alexa provide a (somewhat inaccurate) listing of the top 100 busiest sites worldwide, so I set up a script to gauge their responsiveness – and to see who came out on top. [read more...]

New ModernLife Page Design

Now in neutral.

I've 'reinterpreted' the old blue/white space invaders look - and by 'reinterpreted' I mean I threw it out the window and started again. This is still a young site, so thankfully it's in quite a malleable state, but it's already proven quite popular (read: controversial). The original design was cobbled together in a couple of hours without much forethought - with the possible exception of 'Space Invaders are cool and retro'. [read more...]

After a long hiatus due to increased working commitment, lack of inspiration, and unclear goals: I've decided not to rekindle this blog but to start anew in more fertile soil. Modern Life will remain online as-is for the forseeable future.
